Send us your Question

When it comes to decorating, large areas of unbroken colour can be monotonous. Too much colour, on the other hand, can be busy and distracting. So how do you achieve a balance between the two?

As with roofing, it's wise to select the same type of flooring as that used indoors. or something very similar, so your stoep appears to be another room. The ideal stoep floor should be durable and easy to maintain - tiles, paving stones and concrete are popular options.

When your canvas is literally as big as a house, you want to ensure you get the paint colours right. It can be a daunting task deciding on a scheme for the exterior, especially given the cost of materials and labour, but don't dispair Boland Painters and Restorers has some expert advice.

  • We at Boland Painters firmly believe that one of the best investments you can make in a home when renovating is an attractive floor.
  • If budget is a constraint and like an earthy, organic look try Eathcoat's screed floor stainers on your existing concrete screed. This is a quick and cost-effective way to give an interesting lift to an old concrete screed floor.
  • Decorative cement flooring is one of the most hardwearing floor products available. It's durable, waterproof and easily cleaned and maintained. Boland Painters and Restores recently redid the flooring of a restaurant using Cemcrete so be sure to visit our site again for an upcoming article on this wonderful product.
  • When assessing flooring prices, remember that cement flooring can be extremely cost-effective in the long run because it's so durable and low maintenance.
  • Decorative cement flooring surfaces can be sealed to increase the longevityof the floor. You can also achieve different effects by using various sealers.
  • Always consider expansion joints and door clearances when installing concrete flooring, especially if it is being applied over an existing surface.
  • When buying tiles, check the number of 'feet' on the packaging - the more there are, the more hardwearing the product. Make sure you get a few axtra tiles when you buy, they always come in handy should a tile be replaced.
  • If concrete steps are shiny and slippery, particularly in wet weather, apply a 50mm strip of floor paint in a suitable colour along the leading edge of each step and then sprinkle some builder's sand along the strip while the paint is stil wet. The grains will stick to the paint and you'll have a non-slip surface.
  • Prevent scatter rugs from slipping on gloss surfaces by coating much of the underside of the rug with vehicle tyre repair glue.
  • Last but probably the most important tip Boland Painters and Restorers can give you - always allow as long as possible for a concrete substrate to dry, cure and settle, before applying any other floor products.

What is the right paint colour for you? That indeed is the question and one that many people find difficult to answer. At Boland Painters and Restores we believe that anyone can pick the perfect colour. To help you choose the right paint colour we compiled a list of colour tips to get you started.

    First tile then paint

    Q. We have been dreaming of re-doing our kitchen for years now. After much debate we decided to take the plunge and go for it. Now we are wondering what we should do first, paint the walls or tile the floor?

    A. Well this question caused quite some debate in the Boland Painters, Builders and Electrical Contractor's office, but in the end we all agreed that tiling first is the best option. Allow the tile cement and grout to dry completely then cover the floor with heavy duty plastic taping the edges to the tiles with masking tape. And then start painting the walls. After all it is easier to cover a floor that it is to cover all the walls.
