Patch it up
Any surface to be painted must be free of loose cement, flaking paint or cracks. Remove any loose paint and open cracks with a scraper or palette knife and use an appropriate filler to patch it with.

Smooth it out
Any bumps or dimples in the wall surface will be more visible after applying paint, this is particularly true if you use a satin or high gloss paint. Ensure that any area that has been patched are smooth and level with the original wall surface. Wipe the area with a damp sponge to get rid of any loose filler powder. Do not forget to spot apply undercoat to these areas before painting the entire whole with undercoat.

Let it dry
We at Boland Painters, Builders & Electricians can not stress this enough. You can not apply paint to a moist surface and expect it to stick. Make sure that the walls to be painted are thoroughly dry after washing.

This may sound like a whole lot of work and we are no where near painting yet, but it is worth the effort. And of course you can always phone us at Boland Painters, Builders & Electricians if you prefer to do something more fun with your free time!

    First tile then paint

    Q. We have been dreaming of re-doing our kitchen for years now. After much debate we decided to take the plunge and go for it. Now we are wondering what we should do first, paint the walls or tile the floor?

    A. Well this question caused quite some debate in the Boland Painters, Builders and Electrical Contractor's office, but in the end we all agreed that tiling first is the best option. Allow the tile cement and grout to dry completely then cover the floor with heavy duty plastic taping the edges to the tiles with masking tape. And then start painting the walls. After all it is easier to cover a floor that it is to cover all the walls.

What our clients say
