Send us your Question

When it comes to decorating, large areas of unbroken colour can be monotonous. Too much colour, on the other hand, can be busy and distracting. So how do you achieve a balance between the two?

That's where the 60-30-10 Principle comes in. The numbers refer to the ideal distribution of colours in a room, by percentage. Apply your main colour to approximately 60% of the room, and introduce a secondary colour to about 30% of the remaining surfaces to add contrast and interest (think feature walls and furnishings). An accent colour should make up the final 10% – introduce this in cushions, rugs, and accessories, for example.
60 30 10 principalThis deceptively simple formula will help you to create a unified palette wherever a splash (or three) of colour is required.

When you think about it, this color breakdown is similar to a man's business suit:
60% of the outfit's color is the slacks and jacket
30% of the outfit's color is the shirt
10% of the outfit's color is the tie

Translated to a room setting, it typically means:
60% of the room's color is the walls
30% of the room's color is the upholstery
10% of the room's color is, say, an accent piece or a floral arrangement

    First tile then paint

    Q. We have been dreaming of re-doing our kitchen for years now. After much debate we decided to take the plunge and go for it. Now we are wondering what we should do first, paint the walls or tile the floor?

    A. Well this question caused quite some debate in the Boland Painters, Builders and Electrical Contractor's office, but in the end we all agreed that tiling first is the best option. Allow the tile cement and grout to dry completely then cover the floor with heavy duty plastic taping the edges to the tiles with masking tape. And then start painting the walls. After all it is easier to cover a floor that it is to cover all the walls.
